This Is How Your Food Packaging Is Causing Weight Gain

When counting calories, we often refer to the nutritional information on the food label. A new study suggests that we should also pay attention to the food package itself as it could be a factor in weight gain.

How Food Packaging Is Linked to Weight Gain

Products found in plastic have been shown to interfere with our metabolism, increasing the chances of obesity. Experiments were carried out on products like drink bottles, yogurt containers, and even kitchen wipes. Researchers found eleven chemical compounds that could disrupt metabolism.

Research Conclusions

The chemicals found in food packaging materials could leach into the products we consume. These plastic compounds may interfere with how our bodies metabolize food, resulting in weight gain. It is not known to what extent plastic food packaging contributes to obesity. Therefore, it’s difficult to determine if we should stay clear of plastic wrapping altogether.

Researchers suggest it would be best to avoid food packaging whenever possible. Groceries and fast-food items have both been found to contain harmful chemicals. A study that examined meals from six fast-food restaurant chains found food containers have phalalates. Phalalates are one of the biggest culprits when it comes to hindering the metabolism. Meat-based takeout items like hamburgers were seen to have higher concentrations of phalalates.

Protect Your Health

Food packaging is not the only product that could be causing problems. Personal-care items like shampoo and lotion could also leach harmful chemicals. It may not be possible to eliminate these plastic products, but limiting their use could prevent weight gain.
