Eat Salmon to Prevent This Disease

It’s a good idea to incorporate salmon into your diet for several reasons. Due to its high content of vitamins B6 and D and fatty acids, this fish helps combat different conditions and boosts our immune system. A recent study showed eating a particular fatty acid can prevent atherosclerosis.

Read on to learn more about it.

Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis is the buildup of plaque inside your arteries which causes them to harden or thicken. While it’s still not completely clear what the exact cause is, it’s known that inflammation affects the plaque to build up gradually.

Hardening of the arteries can cause severe pain, heart attacks, strokes. Doctors often call this condition a silent killer because many people don’t experience symptoms until too late.

One study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation explored the role of omega-3 fatty acids in atherosclerosis prevention. The results showed that these acids activate receptors that combat inflammation, thus lowering the risk of atherosclerosis.

The authors of the study said more research is necessary for this area. While omega-3 fatty acids may not provide 100% protection against atherosclerosis, their anti-inflammatory properties are undeniable. Moreover, these acids also have other benefits: lower your blood pressure, improve eye health, combat depression, etc.

Many people don’t take in enough omega-3 fatty acids because most processed food contains lower-quality oils with more omega-6. When someone takes much more omega-6 than omega-3, they may experience inflammation. Since salmon is an excellent source of omega-3, you shouldn’t hesitate to add it to your meals at least once a week.

Eat Heart-Healthy Foods

Besides salmon, many other foods contain omega-3 fatty acids, along with other vitamins and minerals that keep your heart in excellent shape. Flaxseed, chia seeds, and walnuts are easily incorporated into every diet and represent excellent sources of omega-3. If you like salads, canola and flaxseed oil can make excellent dressings.
